The primary objective of this project was to develop and demonstrate the feasibility of a refractory, open-cell-foam-core flow channel inserts that allow a high Pb-17Li alloy tritium breeder exit temperature of ~700°C, in support of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). The project succeeded in meeting stringent design requirements through the development of a refractory structure that has a SiC foam core, bonded with solid SiC face-sheets.
