Rocket engines have one of the severest operational conditions that engineering materials see in real practice. DMS in collaboration with Ultramet led the design and material selection, and subsequent development of multilayer refractory materials for liners in rocket engines. Liners were fabricated at Ultramet according to the design proposed by DMS, where several layers of iridium (for resistance to oxidation at high temperatures), rhenium, and C/C composites were used. The project led to the successful testing of these liners in the Mojave Desert of California.
